Watching TV shows and movies remotely have become easier and more convenient on Amazon Prime as the ‘Watch Party’ feature has just been improved. According to TechCrunch, the feature received a much-needed expansion of limited use cases, as it previously worked on Fire TV devices, desktop web browsers, and the Prime Video mobile app. As of now, the feature will now support non-Amazon streaming devices, smart TVs, and Xbox/PlayStation gaming consoles.
With the updated Watch Party feature, users of up to 100 people with active Prime subscriptions can watch video content at the same time. Each user viewing through this feature can chat about what they are viewing, while the host will have the ability to play, pause, skip, fast-forward, or rewind the group. Yes, interesting?
For now, Amazon’s Watch Party will only be available to users in the US, Canada, and other select countries, and you can only join Watch Party if you’re physically located in the same host country. The company’s FAQ states that “an error message appears if you are using a VPN.” Amazon also notes that users can share access to free streaming video content with a Prime subscription, but if it’s video content designed for rental only, users will need to do so individually. Watch Party is not compatible with live event channels (such as Saturday Night Football), Amazon Prime Video, or Freevee (formerly IMDBtv).
While features from this suite of different streaming platforms were rolled out amid COVID-19 shutdowns in 2020, Amazon began testing the Watch Party feature in 2019 through its Twitch service. Hulu is set to offer a similar, easy-to-use feature by the same name, Disney Plus GroupWatch, and TV streaming apps like Sling TV have joined the list of streaming platforms offering such services. To access the Watch Party feature on Amazon Prime, go to the content you want to watch through a compatible device and turn on the Watch Party button.
