Meta and other tech giants make up the standard body for Metaverse, without Apple

Meta, Microsoft, and other tech giants are teaming up to build the metaverse platform to boost the industry
Meta, Microsoft and other tech giants competing to build the concept of the emerging metaverse have formed a group to encourage the development of industry standards that will make the emerging digital worlds of companies compatible with one another.
Among the participants in the Standards Forum are many of the largest companies in the space, from chip makers to game companies, as well as well-established standards-setting bodies such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the group said in an announced statement. Tuesday.
For now, though, Apple is conspicuously missing from the list, which analysts predict will become a dominant player in the race once it introduces its mixed reality headset this year or next.
Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge its plans for the headphones, though it did give its board of directors a peek at the product, according to Bloomberg. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new forum.
Introducing such a device would put Apple in direct competition with Meta, which has staked its future on metaverse growth and has invested heavily in hardware to realize its vision of interconnected virtual worlds.
Meta, known as Facebook until it changed its name as part of a pivotal last year, has revealed plans to launch a mixed-reality headset codenamed Cambria this year.
For 3D content in the metaverse, Apple worked with Pixar on the “USDZ” file format and with Adobe to ensure it was compatible with the format.
Any company is welcome to join the group, including participants from the crypto world, Neil Trivett, CEO of chip maker Nvidia who chairs the Standards Forum, said in a statement to Reuters.
The forum aims to facilitate communication between a variety of organizations and standards firms to achieve “real-world interoperability” in the, he said, without addressing how Apple’s absence might affect that goal.
