Microsoft Azure adds extra security with new local storage features
Microsoft Azure customers will now be able to create ephemeral operating system disks, which are a type of disk created on local virtual machine (VM) storage that is not saved in remote Azure storage.
This last feature of the giant cloud can help ensure high levels of data confidentiality, as information stored on these types of disks will not be sent to an external data center.
Temporary disks are now available in all regions, and you can learn more about how to implement them from the title here (opens in a new tab).
Ephemeral Operating System Disks
Microsoft says that ephemeral OS disks are ideal for stateless applications, where client data created in one session is not used in the next.
Additionally, Microsoft has indicated that these disks may be ideal for use cases that require lower latency, such as a temporary disk, or the ability to quickly restore or re-image virtual machines and resize instances to standby. original boot.
Temporary OS disks are compatible with Azure Marketplace, custom images, and the Azure Compute gallery (opens in a new tab) (formerly Shared Photo Gallery), but will not support features such as VM image capture, disk, or OS disk switching.
If you’re looking for extra security, you’ll be glad to know that disks support Microsoft Azure Trusted Play (opens in a new tab), but only in certain regions and for certain VM sizes.
Ephemeral OS disks are also free, and customers do not incur storage costs for creating new ones.

This isn’t the only feature Microsoft rolls out for virtual machine enthusiasts.
Microsoft recently updated its free Windows 11 virtual machine (VM) offering, which is designed for developers but can also give users an ideal way to try out their latest operating system before they get started.
