Samsung Introduces the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with Improved Software

The main theme of Samsung’s August 2022 Galaxy Unpacked event was the Flip, and the company took some time to show off a small selection of new devices, which are both foldable and portable. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 represent Samsung’s fourth generation of foldable devices, which makes this time around a bit different. It is no longer a proof of concept; Instead, this year will focus on making minor adjustments to items that have already proven their worth.

The new Z Fold 4, priced the same as last year’s $1,799 model, is the largest and most affordable device in the Galaxy Unpacked lineup. As a sequel to the previous year’s Z Fold 3, not much has changed on the outside. It packs a massive 7.6-inch foldable display on the inside, and when the case is closed, the external display lets you use it like a typical smartphone. This year’s model, according to Samsung, is lighter and smaller than the previous model, helping it still feel more like a smartphone than a tablet.

For this year’s Z Fold, the software-related improvements are the most impressive. At the bottom of the internal screen is the taskbar of a new Windows-like program. For multitasking, you can drag up to three different apps from the taskbar to the rest of the screen. Do you want your email inbox to take up most of your screen while Spotify takes up the rest? Although the new App Pair feature allows you to pair apps so they always open together, you can still do this. There are actually some light features in this area of the mobile market because it’s very similar to a feature found on Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2.

In situations where you need to work on two documents at once or something similar, many applications also allow you to open two instances side by side. Google Meet and Zoom, according to Samsung, were designed specifically for the Z Fold 4 screen.

As for the camera, it has a triple-lens rear camera arrangement with a 50MP ultra-wide lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens. The Z Fold 4’s 4,400mAh battery, with support for wireless charging, will do its best to keep you going all day, while S-Pen compatibility lets you draw with Samsung’s stylus (sold separately). ).

Thanks to the smaller hinges and frames, the overall design is somewhat more streamlined. This is largely cosmetic and only slightly affects how the phone folds; It is a difference of a few millimeters (15.8 mm at the hinge and 14.2 mm where the two sides meet). It weighs 263 grams compared to 271 grams for the Z Fold 3. Although it functions as both a small phone and a tablet, the phone is still quite heavy.

The 50MP main camera, 3x telephoto camera, smaller bezels, and a slimmer hinge are new features on the Fold 4. The front screen has a bit more room because it’s slightly wider. Although it doesn’t add much, it does make the screen look less cluttered and more like a regular phone. Samsung has yet to achieve the best possible level of flatness when the phone is folded; There is still a gap when the phone is closed.

The Fold 4 now features a variety of cameras that fit into a premium device thanks to this update. Last year’s 12MP main camera has been replaced by a 50MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and optical stabilization similar to the S22 and S22 Plus. Although it should be an improvement, it’s still less than what you get with the S22 Ultra.

3x optical zoom has been added to the 2x telephoto lens on the Z Fold 3, though 2x doesn’t go very far. You can now use digital zoom up to 30x, though you definitely shouldn’t because zooming in space is also accessible. These are not really improvements. Instead, the Fold 4 catches up with what other Samsung flagships have to offer.

The Z Fold 4’s Cover Screen is still 6.2-inches diagonally, but it’s now three millimeters larger to give the highly constrained screen a bit more room to breathe. The main display is still 7.6-inches, but Samsung claims it’s 45 percent more durable and tough thanks to tougher ultra-thin glass. The wrinkles are still visible. Although the phone is fully extended, it won’t be a distraction if you’re looking for it. This time, the viscosity of the previously applied screen protector is stronger in an effort to reduce the annoying bubble problem that owners of previous folding models frequently encountered.

With adjustable 120Hz refresh rates, both screens are still OLED panels. There’s no Note-style silo yet, just an S Pen-compatible shell, but the main display is still compatible with Samsung’s custom foldable S Pen (available separately). The cover screen still prevents the S Pen from being used. This time around, the Fold 4 camera at the bottom of the screen is hidden a bit better. It’s still a 4MP sensor, but according to Samsung, tweaks to the pixel array on top reduce visual noise and improve image quality.

With minor software tweaks aimed at improving your multitasking experience, the Fold 4 comes pre-installed with One UI 4.1.1 based on Android 12L. The taskbar is now at the bottom of the screen and not on the side. In flexible mode, there’s also a new touchpad feature that with a small cursor lets you move around the top half of the screen like a mini laptop.

Galaxy Z Fold 4 pre-orders start today and the device will be available globally starting August 26 from Samsung, carriers, and independent stores. In addition to the standard colors of gray, green, beige, and simulated black, Samsung will also offer a burgundy variant.
